Several provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 go into effect in 2011 or went into effect in late 2010 and are expected to have a greater impact in 2011 as employers’ new health plans begin. Some of the more significant changes include:

  1. Coverage for Young Adults – Young adults will be allowed to stay on their parents’ health plans until the age of 26.
  2. Pre-existing conditions – Children under the age of 19 cannot be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  3. Preventive care – Insurers must provide 100% coverage for preventive care.
  4. Lifetime Limits – Insurers may no longer place lifetime dollar limits on essential health care benefits.
  5. Tax-free Savings Accounts (TSAs) TSAs cannot be used for over-the-counter drugs unless a prescription has been obtained from a doctor.
